Every year on the third Thursday of October, credit unions around the world celebrate International Credit Union Day, recognizing the positive impact of member-owned financial cooperatives and their commitment to helping people improve their financial well-being.
At Veridian, we celebrate by spreading kindness throughout our communities. Teams across our organization receive a small budget and choose meaningful ways to give back, whether that's delivering treats to educators, supporting local nonprofits or surprising community members with thoughtful gestures.
“We celebrate International Credit Union Day to raise awareness of credit unions’ cooperatively owned structure and the difference that makes in an organization that’s helping people make financial choices,” said Veridian’s Chief Experience Officer Mark Koppedryer. “Random acts of kindness are a perfect way to express our industry’s philosophy of ‘people helping people.’”
Each act of kindness includes a note inviting recipients to learn more about the credit union difference and sign up for free financial tips.
What Is International Credit Union Day?
International Credit Union Day is an annual celebration on the third Thursday of October to recognize the positive impact credit unions have on members, families and communities around the world. The day highlights the credit union philosophy of people helping people and raises awareness of how credit unions support financial well-being through member-focused products, services and community involvement.
How Veridian Credit Union Celebrates International Credit Union Day
Veridian employees celebrate International Credit Union Day through acts of kindness in the communities where our members live and work. Past activities have included:
- Delivering treats to local teachers and school staff
- Supporting nonprofit wish lists
- Donating supplies to community organizations
- Sharing unexpected acts of kindness with local residents
These efforts reflect Veridian's commitment to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for people to succeed financially and personally.
What Makes a Credit Union Different?
One of the most common questions people ask is: What is the credit union difference? Credit unions are different because they're owned by the people who use them. At Veridian, our members are our owners. As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, Veridian focuses on creating value for members rather than generating profits for outside shareholders, because our members ARE our shareholders. Earnings are returned to members through:
- Competitive loan and savings rates
- Lower fees
- Enhanced products and services
- Investments in technology and member experience
This member-first structure helps Veridian support people at every stage of their financial journey.
Why Member Ownership Matters
Member ownership is at the heart of the credit union difference. Veridian's Board of Directors is elected by our members, helping ensure the credit union remains accountable to the people it serves. This cooperative structure allows decisions to be guided by what's best for members and communities. When members succeed, Veridian succeeds.
Celebrating the "People Helping People" Philosophy
International Credit Union Day is a reflection of the values that guide Veridian year-round. Through community partnerships, financial guidance, volunteerism and acts of kindness, Veridian is committed to helping people build confidence, achieve their goals and create brighter financial futures. We're proud to celebrate the power of people helping people and the positive difference credit unions make every day.
