Summer is here and that could mean a trip is in your near future. Taking a trip may be the best part of your summer, but it can also be pricey.
As you get ready for summer, plan carefully so you don’t spend more than you need to on your adventures. Here are some things to consider:
How will you get there?
There are many ways to travel. You could:
- Drive your own car.
- Drive a rental car.
- Take a flight.
- Ride a train or bus.
Be sure to look at all your options and check prices from multiple companies (rental car companies, airlines, etc.). If you choose to fly or take a train or bus, think about how much you will need to spend on transportation once you get to your destination.
Where will you stay?
Check hotel prices throughout the area you’re visiting to find a good deal. If you have family or friends who live in the area, see if staying with them is an option.
Consider choosing a hotel with a refrigerator and microwave in the room so you can save leftovers from meals and bring your own snacks. And don’t forget about free breakfast.
You could also look for a rental home (Airbnb, VRBO) with a kitchen so you can cook some of your own meals. This will you save money by not eating out for every meal on the trip.
What will you do?
Activities, events and attractions can increase the cost of a summer trip quickly. Before you go, research low-cost or free activities to do during your visit.
Can you pay with rewards?
If you have rewards accounts or travel miles, check your balances and benefits before you book your trip. They may be able to pay for a flight, hotel or some of your activities.
Remember to travel safe
Research the area you’re visiting so you can watch out for local scams or dangerous areas. Try to avoid carrying a lot of cash and don’t keep all your cards and money in one place. That way, if anything gets stolen, you still have access to some money.
Set travel plans for your cards
Some credit and debit card providers will block purchases outside your usual spending area to prevent fraud on your account. Call your financial institution, or log into online banking to let them know you will be traveling. That way you can still access your money without any delays when you’re gone.
If you’re a Veridian member, you can set travel plans in online banking in My Cards.
