You might qualify for one of several programs designed to help struggling borrowers. Federal student loans offer different repayment plans, and you can talk to your lender about restructuring repayment of your private loans. In addition, you may qualify for forbearance or deferment, both of which allow you to postpone making payments on your federal student loans, or a loan forgiveness program. Remember, though, that lowering your monthly payments or extending your repayment period may increase the interest and overall repayment amount. Check with your lender or servicer to learn more about the qualifications for these programs.
