Pet Insurance Questions and Answers
Q. What types of pets are covered?
A. Dogs, Cats, Birds, Mice, Amphibians, Chameleons, Goats, Opossums, Turtles, Lizards, Guinea Pigs, Geckos, Chinchillas, Rats, Snakes, Rabbits, Iguanas, Sugar Gliders, Tortoises, Gerbils, Ferrets, Small Chameleons, Hamsters, Potbellied Pigs, Hedgehogs, and Frogs
Q. Are there age requirements for policies?
A. Dogs and cats need to be six weeks of age or older. There is no upper age limit. Birds must be three months old and in the owner's possession for at least 60 days. Other exotic pets must be six weeks old.
Q. Is there a list of veterinarians I can use?
A. You have the freedom to choose any licensed veterinarian worldwide.
Q. How does my veterinarian receive payment?
A. You pay your veterinarian directly. Veterinary Pet Insurance will adjust your claim and provide reimbursement to you.
Q. How does the deductible work?
A. The $50 deductible applies to each different accident or illness per policy term. Multiple claims may be submitted for the same accident or illness (for example, your pet has an ear infection and requires follow-up visits) but only one deductible applies because it is related to the same incident. There is no deductible for the Vaccination and Routine Care Coverage Plan.
Q. How do I file a claim?
A. See any licensed veterinarian or specialist worldwide, pay for the visit at the time of service, have an authorized veterinary staff member fill out the claim form by listing the diagnosis and signing it, then sign and mail the claim form with the original veterinary invoice to Veterinary Pet Insurance.
Q. How much reimbursement can I expect from the policy?
A. Actual reimbursement varies dependent on the plan selected and veterinary fees.
Q. Once I enroll, how long before my policy is effective?
A. There is a 14-day waiting period after your policy is approved.
Q. Can I cancel my policy before the term is up or at any time?
A. Yes, you may cancel your policy at any time. VPI also provides a 10-day money back guarantee from your enrollment date.
Q. What is a pre-existing condition?
A. Any illness, accident or injury that occurred before the effective date of the policy.
Q. Are pre-existing conditions covered?
A. Pre-existing, hereditary, and congenital conditions are not covered. However, if a preexisting condition is cured, it becomes eligible for coverage.
Q. Are prescriptions covered under my policy?
A. Yes, FDA prescriptions for covered medical conditions are paid up to the benefit allowance.
Q. Are medical history records required for enrollment?
A. Not ordinarily. VPI will review your pet's medical history prior to enrollment if they have certain pre-existing conditions or if they are over ten years of age. For those pets, a copy of the pet's medical history for the last year, including all lab reports must be submitted.
