Waterloo, IA
- - - Traditionally, if you hadn’t been issued a Social Security number, you may have struggled to secure a loan
with financial institutions in the United States.
Veridian Credit Union is proud to provide hope by extending credit to people with an Individual Taxpayer
Identification Number (ITIN).
An ITIN is a nine-digit number that is assigned by the U.S. government. It was created so non-U.S. citizens could
pay taxes on income earned while in the country, but it is not a proof of identification or immigration status. Once
permanent residency or citizenship is achieved in the United States, the ITIN becomes invalid and is replaced with a
Social Security number.
Veridian offers two types of loans to individuals with ITINs:
- Share-secured loan – uses funds in the member’s Savings Account for security
- Co-signer loan – requires a qualified co-signer who is a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security
number
These loans can be used to help pay for the cost of attaining U.S. citizenship, as well as any bills incurred
during the process or other purchases suitable for a small loan amount.
"Veridian’s values drive us to be compassionate and productive leaders of change, and we believe ITIN-related
loans help fulfill that calling," says Wanda Birdsong, Manager of Community Development.
For either ITIN loan, Veridian will require proof of identification in two forms – an ITIN notice (issued
by the Internal Revenue Service) and non-expired picture identification.
To apply for an ITIN loan, visit any Veridian branch or call us at (800) 235-3228 to speak to a Spanish-speaking
employee.
