Several Iowa financial education programs receive grant assistance


Waterloo, IA - - - The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, along with Veridian Credit Union, is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Financial Education Grant, which was made possible through the Veridian Credit Union Fund. The Financial Education Grant targets programs that improve the financial knowledge of adults and/or children.

CFNEIA Family and Children's Council of Black Hawk County received funding for their program "Parent Connection/Empowering Parent." This program provides parent education and financial life skills for at-risk families. Financial education sessions include budgeting, stretching a dollar, balancing a checkbook, predatory lending, how to manage credit and the importance of saving.

Job Foundation in Waterloo received grant assistance for their "Financial Integrity Mentorship Program." This program provides financial workshops to youth, teaching them how credit works, how to use credit wisely, how to write and live on a spending plan, save for the future, prioritize wants and needs and more.

Lutheran Services in Iowa, Inc. has been given grant assistance for the "Waterloo Services for Persons with Disabilities Budgeting Program." This program is designed to improve the financial life skills of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through hands-on instruction. The various financial activities include coin/bill recognition, making correct change, understanding the purchasing value of money, budgeting, figuring sales tax and comparison shopping.

Hardin County Community Foundation was awarded grant assistance for "Financial Literacy Collaboration." Funding will provide a variety of financial programs to youth and adults in Hardin County. New programs that will be offered are: "Ready, Set, Retire," an educational, interactive display at three Hardin County VITA clinic sites, "Money Talk: a financial course for women" and "Sharpening you Financial Coaching Skills" a training program provided by ISU Extension.

Another recipient of grant funding was Des Moines-based Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. Their program titled "Anti-Predatory Lending Education Campaign" will provide education to the public on the dangers predatory tactics pose to the safety and stability of families and neighborhoods. 
Youth and Shelter Services, Inc., another Des Moines organization, received funding for the "Iowa Homeless Youth Centers - Financial Coaching Program." This organization provides free services to runaway and homeless youth and families. The financial coaching program uses curriculum, which blends fundamental coaching skills with strong financial content to help participants realize the financial realities of independent living.

House of Hope in Cedar Rapids was awarded funds for their program titled "Personal Finances for Teens and Young Adults." Funding will provide teens and young adults the Foundations in Personal Finance by Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace School Curriculum. The lessons covered include: savings, understanding investments, wealth building and college savings, dangers of debt, credit bureaus and collection practices, budgeting, bargain shopping, relating with money, career choices and taxes, insurance, real estate and mortgages.

Veridian Credit Union, founded in 1934 in Waterloo, Iowa, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. The credit union offers a full range of consumer financial services and employs more than 500 Iowans throughout 25 branches.

The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, serving Black Hawk County and 20 affiliate counties, is a permanent public charitable foundation built by donations from individuals, families, organizations and businesses. For over 54 years, Cedar Valley residents have been turning to the Community Foundation to help their community.
